* Fewer than last year.

The comparative for countable masses, like people, or words, or apples, is "fewer". Less is used for quantities that are measured, not counted: less sand, less space, less energy.

Don’t tell me climate change caused the dark clouds of fascism, you are really stretching attribution science here. You may also look into what you mean by democracy, because Trump was actually democratically elected.

Yep. Sometimes popular sovereignty results in kakistocracy. That's the way America's founders left it, because as Churchill pointed out, every other way they thought of was worse. As horrified as I am by what American democracy has wreaked in the present, I wouldn't have it any other way (provided the current POTUS and SCOTUS don't bulldoze the Constitution, that is). The voice of the people may not be the voice of God, but there is no greater political authority!
